Twenty-five Cents Spent
The first quarter of the school year has come to a close. It is hard to believe we have been in school for eight weeks. It seems like just yesterday the first day of school butterflies were fluttering about. The excitement back to school season brings has faded away and the students have fallen into a lovely school routine. What an adventure it has been thus far! We have learned many different things so far this year and I would like to share some of this with you. As Mr. Morgan always says, “Twenty-five cents of the school year have been spent.” Here is a quick “Peek Inside” on how we’ve spent our twenty-five cents this quarter.
In first and second grade math we have been learning about how to utilize base 10 blocks, 3-digit numbers, and how to compare numbers. We have also been learning strategies’ for adding and subtracting such as, counting on and using doubles math facts to help us solve other problems. In kindergarten math we have been learning to write and read numbers one through ten. Students are becoming familiar with 5 frames and 10 frames, which is helpful in first grade math. We have also been developing number sense each and everyday at all grade levels.
Students throughout this quarter seem to particularly enjoy our Daily 5 rounds during reading. At this time, students are able to work with words, writing, read with a buddy, listen to reading on our new ipads, and learn new reading strategies with the teacher.
Reading strategies we’ve practiced this quarter:
In addition to our Daily 5 rounds, students have an opportunity to work on what we call DOL, which stands for Daily Oral Language. During this time we fix sentences that are grammatically flawed. In phonics, kindergarten has been learning letters and sounds with Echo, our friendly classroom owl, who they LOVE. One student shared this was her favorite time of day besides recess, of course. In 1st and 2nd grade we have been reviewing vowels, consonants, and blends. Overall, students take pride in their boarder sheets for handwriting each week, which is part of the Language Arts curriculum. Kindergarten handwriting entails practicing correct letter formation.
We have a blast during science time! The students enjoy this time of day, especially the boys in my class. Science is discussion filled and students like the various projects that we do in this subject.
Projects completed this quarter:
During Bible we have learned about:
We have enjoyed our Daily Read Alouds about firefighters, bats, and other fun subjects. The students have enjoyed learning about laws and their community in Social Studies. There are many things we have learned; I could go on all day! We continue to work on developing our social skills and learning to get along as we work and play. Next quarter, my goal is to incorporate “Writers Workshop” where students will be able to practice and further develop their writing skills.
We had a field trip this quarter to the fire station. I am thankful to all the parents who were willing to drive us to the Northville Fire Station and those who baked cookies. Without you the trip would not have been possible! A special thank you on behalf of Julie Verhelle our Home and School Director and Bible Labs Coordinator.
Below is a slideshow of pictures I’ve taken along the way. I look forward to spending 75 more cents with your child this school year!

Mrs. Arvizu
